What is the Spina Bifida Disease?

Question:
I need to know what is the Spina Bifida Disease. Can someone please explain to me some info about this disease. I'll appreciate it very much.

Answer:
In short, Spina Bifida is a defect in neural tube closure. It can result in manifestations as insignificant as a missing dorsal vertebral spine (probably the most common) through a spinal cord and parts of the brain developing on the outside of the body. The most common serious problem is meningomyelocele, in which the lumbosacral area has an opening from which the thecal sac protrudes, containing the meninges and lower spinal cord. These infants are usually paraplegic and will die unless vigorously supported. The disease is hereditary and more frequent in celtic peoples.
