how did your pregnancy go with Spina Bifida and how did it affect you?

Question:
I have spinabifida and hydrocephalus and my fiance REALLY wants us to have our own kids and not have to adopt unless its a last result. So what I'm wondering is, how did your pregnancy go with have this disability and how did it affect you? i'm able to walk on my own with the help of braces when out in public, i have control of my bladder with an artificial urinary sphincter, I've had a bunch of surgeries and obviously have the shunt from my head to my abdomen so do you think it would be a big problem for me if I got pregnant and would it be safe? I have different doctors that told me that it would be alright and others that said I might get paralized, what have doctors told you?

Answer:
I have not experienced this personally, but I know someone else with spina bifida who had a baby. It was a very complicated matter for them. Her doctor didn't know much about spina bifida and pregnancy (as many doctors don't, therefore best guesses are often the best that can be offered) so it was a learning matter for everyone involved. This woman acquired gestational diabetes. She was swollen all over through the last 4-5 months. As well, due to this complication she was in the hospital, bedridden for much of that time. She also had a bladder infection from very early on in the pregnancy. It got so bad she finally had to be treated with antibiotics, even though it might have been dangerous to the child. She had her baby by C-section at around her 8th month. The good news is the baby was born very healthy with no problems to him. The swelling and diabetes and all complications went away after the baby was born.
