Can you give me some information about family history of spina bifida?

Question:
Does anyone here have any family history of spina bifida? My doctor wants me to have genetic testing, but my insurance doesn't consider it neccesary in cases of spina bifida. We only have one case of it in the family (my maternal aunt) and because my grandmother considered it a punishment from God, noone will talk about it. I have no idea how severe her case is or what caused it. Does anyone know what the chances of my child being born with it?

Answer:
I have a second cousin who has a pretty severe case of spina bifida. She has had many surgeries in her lifetime, several just to give her control over her excretory functions. And she still has to have crutches or walker or wheelchair to get around. But she is the only case of it in the family (and she copes quite well, is angelically beautiful and very intelligent, and now has a loving husband and two healthy children with him).

Chances are much less these days than when my cousin was born, I think, just because of the advances in medicine, etc.
