Is "ecstacy" one of the known causes of spina bifida?

Question:
I have a client who recently delivered a baby that had spnia bifida and no anus. She says that she believes that the baby was born with spina bifida because she had taken "ecstacy" on the night the baby was concieved.

It seems to me that spina bifida develops not at conception, but a little further along the pregnancy. Is this correct? Is "ecstacy" one of the known causes of spina bifida? It seems to me that she may have just not known about folic acid, or possibly did not get the pre-natal care she should have recieved. (she was living in an abusive relationship)

Any clarification of these matters would be very helpful. Thank you.

Answer:
Spina bifida happens when there is a lack of B vitamins and minerals in the blood stream which cause the spinal cord and nerves to not fully develop.

Which is in fact why they have begun fortifying foods with minerals such as Folic Acid, and it is very important for any woman of child bearing age to eat healthy and make sure there foods include plenty of fruits and vegetables, throughout their child bearing years.

Most damage can and usually does happen in the first month of pregnancy.
