Can you give me some recommendation on the symptoms below(may relate to the Spina-Bifida Occulta)?

Question:
The 12 1/2 year old daughter of a neighbour of mine has Spina-Bifida Occulta. She also has problems with her hands and the specialists who she has seen have been of no help for the problems with the hands. They don't seem to know of see the problems with the hands as relatively unimportant.

The girl's fingers and hands periodically become swolen and "hot". She becomes unable close her hands. The hands feel "hot" to anyone who touches them.

Is this condition related to the Spina-Bifida Occulta? If not what condition do these symptoms suggest?

Any recommendations to where this condition can be properly treated will be greatly apprectiated. They have had little success so far. What treatments do you suggest? Where can they get more information?

Answer:
Spina bifida occulta is only a failure of complete fusion of the posterior elements of the spinal canal (laminae). This is only a bony defect and should have nothing to do with the symptoms mentioned. If the hands feel hot to the examining physician, this may suggest autonomic dysfunction. There may be no treatment for the above condition. I am assuming, of course, that there is no entrapment of neural elements in the bony spinal defect.
